Growing Together: Looking back at the first year of our Allotment
This year, Conwy Mind have been developing an allotment space in Colwyn Bay. Thanks to Lottery funding we have been able to develop this into an “eco-therapy” growing space for Conwy Mind participants.
Throughout the past year, we’ve been able to host a range of workshops including willow weaving, fermentation, flower arranging, natural dyes and talks from local nature-based charities such as North Wales Wildlife Trust. The workshops have provided an opportunity for people to build their confidence, develop new skills, connect to nature and learn to use the produce we’ve grown on the Conwy Mind allotment plot.
“I find that doing this kind of activity helps me with my mental health, I enjoy being creative and it provides a focus that I can continue at home. I enjoy meeting other people too and Caroline’s workshops were warm, relaxed and inclusive.”
Alongside the workshops we run a regular allotment session, where volunteers and participants have been coming together to plan, prepare the plot, sow seeds and grow a variety of fruit and vegetables. When we first received the keys to our allotment the site was very overgrown. The group have worked extremely hard to get it prepared in time for the first growing season.
We’re pleased to report that this year has been a successful first growing season! We’ve managed to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes, onions and much more, alongside dahlias, cosmos, cornflowers and other flower for our pollinators.
The allotment and workshops have been an extremely successful addition to the support we provide for our community, with strong attendance and excellent feedback. These workshops have not only improved the growth of our fruit and veg, but also of the participants. Another participant quoted; “It helped to talk more as I struggle with socialising and going to this workshop help to overcome my worries”
This project plays an important role in supporting mental health, empowering people with the confidence, skills, and experience to grow and maintain green spaces around them while offering a safe, relaxed and low pressure way to socialise and talk to others.
Our workshops brought together the community, from beginner gardener’s to more experienced gardener’s along with those who may not have the space to garden at home. We provide a comforting and welcoming space for those who may be struggling with their mental health and don’t wish to be alone in difficult times. Another participant quoted that these workshops “Improved my mood and also gave me a reason to get up and leave my house.”
We always welcome and encourage feedback. Here are some quotes from our attendees of recent workshops; these are from different people and are kept anonymous for their privacy.
“Mental health is something I struggle with everyday I’ve learnt how to keep it under control in busy environments. Just being out and mixing with others is a confidence boost also takes your mind off any struggles. Everyone is different I suppose”
“I enjoyed learning all about making my own compost”
“It has helped me to feel confident about gardening and has helped improve my concentration which has helped my mood.”
“I left the workshop feeling much lighter than when I arrived. Meeting other people and sharing craft experiences helps me cope with ill health and living alone.”
These workshops and our allotment have been a fantastic new form of support for our community, and have shown real benefit to our users. We want to thank the Lottery Community Fund for granting us the funds to develop this project.
